New business grant: The Green Heat Network Fund

The government has announced The Green Heat Network Fund, a £270m fund to boost low-carbon heat network projects across England. If you are an energy network looking for new opportunities, then you have come to the right place. Securing a grant for your business can have many benefits. So, this could be the grant for you.

About The Green Heat Network Fund

The Green Heat Network Fund aims to use recycled heat for homes and businesses to reduce carbon emissions. Building heat currently accounts for around 21 per cent of the UK’s carbon emissions.

It has been stated that heat networks that draw energy from a central source could reuse urban heat. For example, heat from the London Underground could be recycled. This means there is no reproduction of more emissions or by-products.

The Energy Minister, Lord Callanan said: “Finding a mix of innovative solutions to how we heat our homes in the most affordable way is going to be vital as we support people to gradually transition away from gas boilers over the next 15 years.

“Today’s announcement shows we are going even further in our goals to expand this tried and tested heat networks technology, making even more use of the likes of recovered heat from the London Underground to heat our homes.

“The Green Heat Network Fund will also allow us to drive forward the new, cost-effective and low-carbon technologies we need to kick-start new industries and support new jobs in the low-carbon technology sector as we build back greener from the pandemic.”

What is the funding for?

The Green Heat Network Fund is to allow more towns and cities to use low-carbon heating systems. This is so they no longer use central heating sources. Gas boilers, for example, use a lot of energy, so it is better to use recycled heat. The fund aims to have these changes implemented from 2022 onwards. This is due to the government’s ambition to lessen the use of fossil fuel boilers.

Eligibility

The Green Heat Network Fund will only support low-carbon technologies such as heat pumps, solar and geothermal energy. It will open to private, public, and third sector applicants within England in April 2022. It is anticipated to run to 2025.
