Is this the future? Buses, shuttles, and delivery vans could soon become self-driving…

Thanks to a brand new grant for self-driving vehicles, we could see self-driven vehicles hit the UK roads by 2025.

This £40million grant for self-driving vehicles could create thousands of skilled jobs across the UK for the next decade. It will also drive forward the UK in self-driven technology.

Who will be running the grant?

The grant will be run by the Centre for Connected and Autonomous Vehicles (CCAV). They will be bringing together world-class expertise from across the public, private and academic sectors. Their goal is to create an environment in the UK for new technologies and business models. Where innovation, safety and regulation are at the forefront.

What is the grant for?

The aim of this government funding is to bring together companies and investors. From this, we can work towards a sustainable future. First nationally, then globally. The hope is to cement the UK as a global leader in self-driven technology.

This grant for self-driving vehicles will also help to accelerate the self-driven market dramatically. Which by 2035, is estimated to be worth £42billion in the UK economy alone. Not only that, but it is also likely that it will create 38,000 new skilled jobs.

“This funding will help unlock the incredible potential of this new and growing industry, building on the continued development of self-driving technology, attracting investment and helping make our transport cleaner, safer and more efficient.” – Lord Grimstone, Minister of Investment, who issued the grant for self-driving vehicles.

By investing in self-driven technology, we are making journeys safer, greener, and more reliable. From this grant for self-driving vehicles, £1.5million of the funding will go towards research. This will include how self-driven technology can be used for public transport. The outcome of this could not only make journeys safe, but also reduce congestion by adding alternate self-driving routes.

“With around 88% of road collisions currently caused by human error, this funding will drive the introduction of new technology to improve travel for all, while boosting economic growth and highly skilled jobs across the nation.” – Trudy Harrison, Transport Minister.

Recently mentioned in the Queen’s speech, the government announced a Transport Bill that will introduce new, comprehensive legislation. This means that legal assurances will be put into place, to enable the safety, and sensible deployment of self-driven vehicles.

There will also be rigorous testing of all self-driven vehicles that will be produced. Only those approved by the Automated Lane Keeping System (ALKS) Regulation will be allowed on the roads.

So, we ask, is this the future of transport in the UK?

It certainly seems like it. We know how much technology has advanced in the UK so far. So, it makes sense to keep going with new innovations.
