Fisheries and Seafood Scheme in England awarding £6.1 million in funds

The new Fisheries and Seafood Scheme is now open for applications. The scheme has a total of £6.1 million in funds to award in England over the next 12 months.

The Marine Management Organisation (MMO) Fisheries and Seafood Scheme has been created to support England’s:

  • Seafood sector
  • Coastal communities
  • Marine environment.

The scheme will provide funding for a range of projects that deliver the following seven priorities. These are:

  1. Promoting a sustainable sector for future generations
  2. Protecting the marine environment by reducing the environmental impacts of the sector
  3. Delivering world-class science and innovation
  4. Supporting coastal communities to promote social inclusion and economic growth
  5. Enhancing the value chain through processing and marketing. Opening the potential for English businesses both home and abroad
  6. Supporting the reform of stock and quota management to ensure a balance between fishing opportunities and capacity
  7. Developing industry infrastructure that’s essential to supporting growth across the whole sector.

What will the Fisheries and Seafood Scheme focus on?

The fund will focus on projects that help businesses outside of the EU’s Common Fisheries Policy. It has also been set up in order to help businesses recover from the impact of COVID-19. It will fund projects on a range of aspects such as:

  • Providing professional advice to local businesses
  • Creating new opportunities for businesses – such as local markets and supporting them to sell a wider range of projects
  • Supporting businesses to adapt to new markets and adjust to new trading conditions
  • Making fishing gear more selective of size and species
  • Support sustainable innovation and promote environmentally friendly processing methods
  • Protect the environment via equipment that reduces the impact of fishing on the marine environment
  • Improve safety on fishing vessels and onshore
  • Enabling safer working conditions.

The fund hopes to work with the fishing industry to reduce carbon emissions and provide environmental improvements. The MMO will administrate the scheme on behalf of Defra.

Fisheries Minister, Victoria Prentis, said:

“We are fully committed to the fishing and seafood sector, and as an independent coastal state, we now have a renewed focus to level up coastal communities across England.

“Through investment across the catching, aquaculture and processing sectors, the Fisheries and Seafood Scheme will support the long-term sustainability and success of seafood businesses throughout England and will help safeguard our marine environment. I encourage all eligible businesses to apply.”

Tom McCormack, Chief Executive Officer of the Marine Management Organisation, said:

“MMO continues to support our fishing and seafood industry. We look forward to managing applications to the Fisheries and Seafood Scheme, and helping businesses to develop, adapt and succeed.”
