Defence and Security Accelerator funding open call for Security Rapid Impact Innovations

The Defence and Security Accelerator (DASA) funding has been launched for Security Rapid Impact Innovations. This is Cycle 1 of 5 funding opportunities in this area in 2012/2022. It is an open call focusing on tackling security challenges in the UK.

The DASA is seeking ideas related to one or more of the following government departments:

  • Department of Transport (in relation to security departments)
  • Home Office
  • Other Government Security Departments.

The Defence and Security Accelerator funding is seeking ideas that could enhance UK security via:

  • Enhance understanding of threats to UK security and safety
  • Enable threat prevention
  • Enhance threat response.

Suppliers can submit Security Rapid Impact Innovations proposals. These are viewed as something which will undergo a period of research and development (R&D). R&D needs to be done in order to deliver a technology prototype or model demonstration. This needs to be done at around Technology Readiness Level (TRL) 6 or 7 at the end of the contract. The demonstration needs to be at a limited scale and in the context/environment it’s expected to be used in.

Defence and Security Accelerator funding proposals can also include a further priced option for a Testing and Trailing phase. This should be outlined in the proposal under the ‘Testing and Trialling’ section. It should include:

  • Approximate timings
  • Deliverables
  • Maximum total costs
  • Any travel and subsistence
  • Costs from third-party sites.

Projects should have an aim of achieving an impact within a 3-year time frame from the completion of the project.

What’s available?

There is no funding limit for the Security Rapid Impact Innovations open call. However, they expect bids between £100k – £350k. Projects must be completed by March 2024.

How to apply

You must submit an Innovation Outline prior to a full proposal submission for Defence and Security Accelerator funding. You can submit this by contacting a DASA Innovation Partner page.

Here’s some guidance on submitting an Innovation Outline:

  • You can submit an Innovation Outline for any idea.
  • You’ll need to identify the current Technology Readiness Level of your innovation.
  • Submissions should be made online via their submissions service (submitting an Innovation Outline – Referral to an Innovation Partner).
  • They’ll aim for the Innovation Partner to contact you within 10 working days of your Innovation Outline submission.
  • Your Innovation Outline should be a brief overview of your innovation. At this stage, you don’t need to include all the information required for a full proposal.
  • There’s no need to cost your idea fully at this stage.
  • An Innovation Partner will then advise you whether your idea is suitable for DASA funding. They may think your idea is better suited to alternative routes of support/funding.

Submission deadline: 8th July 2021
